Emma has been involved in sustainable energy since 1996, before which she worked in marketing and public relations for five years. Throughout that time, she has been closely involved with the Home Energy Conservation Act (HECA), having undertaken an MSc thesis on the Act and subsequently working on the Energy Saving Trust's HECAction programme as a key contact. Before setting up Impetus with Dave, Emma worked for the Association for the Conservation of Energy , managing a variety of research projects, and then briefly at the Improvement and Development Agency for Local Government, where she set up the Local Authority Energy Advisory Service (now Practical help) and was a member of the Beacon Councils selection team.

Emma was a Trustee of Eaga Partnership Charitable Trust from 2001-2004.
